SUMMER IN SARAJEVO

The digital version of Wim Wenders’ film THE MILLION DOLLAR HOTEL from 2000, just restored at the highest possible standards today, will have its international premiere on August 15 at the 27th Sarajevo Film Festival, where Wenders was awarded the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo at the opening. A retrospective of eight selected films will accompany the program, which also includes a Master Class with Wim Wenders. The brand-new trailer for THE MILLION DOLLAR HOTEL can be seen here.

WWS Managing Director Hella Wenders was invited to the jury of the short film competition of the Sarajevo Film Festival. The awards ceremony will take place on August 19.

 

WIM WENDERS SCHOLARSHIP ENTERS THE EIGHTH ROUND

For the eighth time, the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, in cooperation with the Wim Wenders Foundation, has announced the Wim Wenders Fellowship for new, innovative film projects. 38 applications were submitted to the Filmstiftung by the August 2 deadline.

 

FURTHER APPOINTMENT TO THE FOUNDATION’S BOARD

We are very pleased to welcome Rusta Mizani, Head of Business Affairs at augenschein Filmproduktion, as the fifth member of the Wim Wenders Foundation Board. Rusta Mizani will primarily take care of the Foundation’s non-profit and financial affairs and thus take over the duties of Erich Thum, who has retired from his board position at his own request after many years of generous dedication. We thank Erich Thum from the bottom of our hearts for his valuable expertise, which he offered to the Foundation for so many years!

We are happy to announce the first Wim Wenders retrospective in Japan: ROAD MOVIES / UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD, hosted by XX ,will present ten films from Wim Wenders at Bunkamura Le Cinéma in Tokyo from 5 November to 16 December 2021.

 

FOR YOUNG TALENTS

The Wim Wenders Foundation, in collaboration with the Goethe Institute and the Institute Français, supports the project Iran – A Sense of Place, in which six selected Iranian filmmakers discuss the sense of place in Iran and in exile in a curated episodic documentary.

 

IN SCIENCE

In July 2021, the volume Kontinuität im Wandel: Begegnungen mit dem Filmemacher Wim Wenders (Continuity in Change: Encounters with Filmmaker Wim Wenders) was published by edition Text & Kritik. Edited by Jörn Glasenapp, the anthology contains thirteen contributions to Wenders’ films, starting with the short films of the 1960s and ending with his more recent works such as DON’T COME KNOCKING (2005) or SUBMERGENCE (2017).

 

REVIEW

On the occasion of the Max Ophüls 2021 Film Festival, Wim Wenders was awarded the Honorary Award for his contributions to the young German-language film. The festival, which is dedicated to young filmmakers, honored Wim Wenders’ “central role in German film history and cinematic present, as well as his unique commitment to young filmmakers” with this award.

German National Broadcaster ARD’s Wim Wenders Online Werkschau has recorded three million views in the summer of 2020. Those who have not yet had a chance to take a look can do so until 2023 – the ARD Mediathek will continue to offer individual films in a changing program.
