The Salt of the Earth

“For years my standard answer to the question
which contemporary photographer impressed me the most,
was always the same: Sebastião Salgado!
And then I thought one day: what a pity!
We’re both still working, but we never met!
So I made the effort to get to know him.
We got along well, from then beginning,
but it never occurred to us in these first meetings
to think in any way about a common film.
That just happened „by itself“.
And like all of my documentary films this one also started with the desire
to share something I loved with as many people as possible.”

Wim Wenders

During the last forty years, the photographer Sebastião Salgado has been travelling through the continents, in the footsteps of an ever changing humanity. He has witnessed the major events of our recent history ; international conflicts, starvations and exodus… He is now embarking on the discovery of pristine territories, of the wild fauna and flora, of grandiose landscapes : a huge photographic project which is a tribute to the planet’s beauty.
Sebastião’s Salgado’s life and work are revealed to us by his son, Juliano, who went with him during his last journeys, and by Wim Wenders, a photographer himself.

THE SALT OF THE EARTH was awarded the Un Certain Regard Special Prize at the Cannes film festival this year. The Wim Wenders Foundation Team is happy to inform you of its releases in French theatres on 15th of October, in Italian theatres on the 24th of October, and in German theatres on the 30th of October 2014.
